What is PVC Vinyl?

First of all, I would like you to know that PVC vinyl is an abbreviation of Polyvinyl Chloride. It is generally referred to as PVC. This product is a very important one in the world as it is the world’s third most-produced artificial plastic polymer. The only artificial plastic polymers that are of greater production are polyethylene and polypropylene.  Let me tell you that PVC is a very important product, one that is produced in enormous quantity. About 40 million tons of PVC are produced annually.

You would commonly see PVC in two basics forms, rigid and flexible forms. It is very pertinent to note that these forms have quite different purposes. Though some persons use them together without defining their customized uses, these forms have uses that best suits them. Let us take the rigid form of PVC. This form is also seldomly referred to as rigid polyvinyl chloride. This form is employed for purposes of building pipes, doors and windows. This is not the only use. Do not be surprised that PVC is also employed in making bottles, dish coverings, non-food packaging among others. This rigid PVC is also used in making cards of different types. We talk here about bank membership cards, ATM cards security cards and other compatible purposes. All these rigid purposes are made possible given the sturdy and hard nature of the rigid PVC. Let us now go to flexible PVC. This the of PVC is made available by softening the PVC through the addition of materials called plasticizers. The common plasticizer used for this purpose is phthalates. This type of flexible PVC can then be used for plumbing purposes, electric cable installation, flooring among other compatible purposes. There is also another variation to PVC types. Cotton or linen can be incorporated into it to produce materials like canvas. How does PVC look generally with its composition? Pure PVC is actually white and lightly solid. It does not dissolve when put in alcohol but can dissolve when in tetrahydrofuran.

Let me then take you on a brief journey of how PVC came into being. PVC was actually an accidental discovery. It was mistakenly synthesised by German Chemist named Eugene Baumann in 1872. The PVC formed itself as a white solid in a flask which had vinyl chloride which had been left bare to sunlight by the German chemist. After this unintentional discovery, some scientists try to utilize the discovery but to what result? In the early twentieth century the Russian scientific expert Ivan Ostromislensky and Fritz Klatte of the German chemical organisation, Griesheim-Elektron both endeavoured to utilize PVC in business items, yet troubles in preparing the unbending, in some cases fragile polymer upset their endeavours. After this failure, there was eventually success. Waldo Semon and the B.F. Goodrich Company built up a strategy in 1926 to plasticize PVC by mixing it with different added substances. The outcome was a progressively adaptable and all the more effectively handled material that before long accomplished broad business use.

Having given a brief explanation of the chemical process involved in the polymerization process, let us see how PVC is being utilized in the production of products in this modern day.

First, let us have a look at pipes. Actually, about half of the PVC product in the world is actually used to manufacture pipes of different purposes. Here, we talk about pipes used for construction purposes, both industrial and residential constructions. PVC is used in manufacturing underground pipes used for sewage disposition in industries. It is also employed in the manufacturing of chimney pipes used for disposition of soothes in industries. The pipes used here are made of rigid PVC, why? Because they have to be sturdy for these purposes. When we now talk about the PVC pipes used in residential constructions, we are referring to ones used for drainage and aesthetic purposes mainly. What we are saying here is that PVC is used in manufacturing flexible pipes that you use in the construction of your residential drainage system? Why do we mention the purpose of aesthetic here? This is because this type of PVC looks more elegant than the industrial ones. They are specifically made for the construction of your houses.

We would then look at the use of PVC in the production of clothing materials and electrical cables. Clothing materials. When we talk about PVC clothing here, we are referring to water-resistant clothing. PVC is used in manufacturing raincoats, boots, construction overalls, water-resistant jeans and all. When we now delve into PVC being used in manufacturing electrical cables, we are talking about insulation. PVC is used here as the insulation on electric cables.

PVC is also used in flooring, manufacturing wire ropes and other compatible uses.

Conclusion Of PVC Vinyl

After a good perusal of this article, you should have a good knowledge of what PVC is, its composition and also its uses.
